Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK passport photo?

45 mm tall × 35 mm wide for prints. Digital photos must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB.

Does a UK passport photo need a white background?

No — HM Passport Office requires a plain light-grey or cream background, not pure white. The background must contrast clearly with your face.

How big should my head be in a UK passport photo?

Your head (chin to crown) must be 29–34 mm in a 45 mm photo — roughly 64–76% of the photo height.

Are glasses allowed in a UK passport photo?

Generally no. Glasses are only permitted if removal is medically impossible, and must not have tinted lenses or cause glare.
